Travel Mistakes to Avoid

Via readers share travel don’ts.

Over the years, Via readers have learned not to pack too much, not to travel at peak times, and not to leave home without their AAA cards, maps, and books. They also know how to avoid plenty of other pitfalls.

“Don’t neglect to label your luggage, inside and out,” says Judy Gong of San Francisco.

“Don’t leave without food,” says Dolores Daigle of Portland.

“Don’t trust GPS blindly,” says Marilyn Aberle of Portland. “A short route isn’t always safe.”

“Never take a taxi before agreeing on the price,” advises Judy Nowaski of Meridian, Idaho.

“Unpack when you arrive or you never get comfortable,” says Andrew Ko of San Francisco.

“Don’t listen to naysayers—take your dream trip,” says Susan Kitazawa of San Francisco.

“Never travel without your own toilet paper,” warns Judy Quon of Sacramento.
