When you pick up your own trash when you travel, you are showing respect for the city and country you are visiting.

Ease your impact on the earth when you travel by reusing plastic bags, recycling trash in your car, and carrying water bottles, mugs, and dishware, VIA readers suggest. A few more ideas:

“Order ice cream in a cone and skip the paper cup,” says Laurie-Ann Barbour of Cotati, Calif.

“When you get there, park centrally, then walk to the sights,” says Melody King of Salem, Ore.

“Make sure your tires are at the right pressure,” says Laurence Dang of Sunnyvale, Calif.

“Drive at night to use less air-conditioning and avoid stop-and-go tra≈c,” says Caroline Edillor of Santa Rosa, Calif.

“When you go walking, bring a bag to collect garbage,” say Michelle Mitchell and Paul Maciolek of Livermore, Calif.

“Take your vacations close to home,” say Gerald and Libby Meyer of San Jose, Calif.
