What makes a stay at the Lighthouse Inn at Point Cabrillo so special? "Having a lighthouse at your front door and nearly 300 acres to walk on," says Jim Kimbrell, who runs the property just north of Mendocino, Calif. Opened last fall, the inn occupies two cottages and a restored 1909 light keeper’s residence of four rooms, all with private baths and sitting areas.
Not that nature lovers will linger indoors. The surrounding bluffs are home to deer and foxes, while the skies are dotted with northern harriers and ospreys. And each spring, gray whales cavort off the coast. Visiting history buffs can explore a period-decorated residence and the lighthouse museum with displays on the still working Fresnel lens. But only overnight visitors receive an evening tour of the lighthouse.
