Shoppers find reusable goods at Portland Oregon’s Rebuilding Center

By Linda Weber

Portland is often praised as one of our country’s greenest cities. It has 35 buildings certified by the U.S. Green Building Council, half its power comes from renewable resources, and its MAX light-rail system (free downtown), buses, and bike lanes reduce traffic and pollution. If you’re a traveler looking to minimize your carbon footprint, Portland might be the destination for you. Here are some suggestions to help you build a
green itinerary.

ECOTRUST BUILDING This 1895 warehouse, renovated using 98 percent recycled materials, houses Patagonia (pick up a jacket made from former soda pop bottles), Hot Lips Pizza (bite into a pie piled high with local veggies), and World Cup Coffee (get a fair-trade fix). www.ecotrust.org/ncc.

HIGGINS RESTAURANT & BAR Chef Greg Higgins buys from farms just outside the city limits. Confit of duck with brandied blood orange conserve, anyone? www.higgins.ypguides.net.

HOTEL MONACO The Carless Package includes bike rentals and light-rail passes for use between the airport and the hotel. From $250; discount for AAA members. www.monaco-portland.com.

REBUILDING CENTER Pedestal sinks, claw-foot tubs, crystal doorknobs, and other pieces of the past fill this salvage emporium. www.rebuildingcenter.org.

ROOTS ORGANIC BREWING COMPANY Belly up to the bar in this repurposed tattoo parlor and order a cold one brewed with organic hops and barley. www.rootsorganicbrewing.com.
