Dream date on the Columbia
Cannery Pier Hotel

By Kristina Malsberger

Romance isn’t just in the air in Astoria, Ore. It’s in the water—or on it, actually, at the stunning new Cannery Pier Hotel where rooms float 600 feet out over the Columbia River.

Designed by owner-architect Robert Jacob, the hotel sits on the 100-year-old pilings of the former Union Fisherman’s Cooperative Packing Company. Its exposed steel beams, wooden trusses, and jaunty red paint job celebrate the heritage of the original structure.

The trystworthy rooms—with cozy fireplaces, claw-foot bathtubs, and private viewing decks—catch the light off the mighty Columbia, whose 1,200-mile journey ends here at the Pacific.

After you awaken to fishing boats chugging past your window, you’ll have plenty of options: relaxing at the on-site spa, touring Astoria’s eccentric Victorians and excellent maritime museum, or exploring the area’s historic forts and forests. That is, if you ever leave your room.

Rates range from $179 to $525.
