Capilano Bridge,
North Vancouver, B.C.

overhead shot of Capilano Suspension Bridge in North Vancouver B.C.

The Capilano Suspension Bridge—a 450-foot span of steel cables and cedar planks 10 minutes north of downtown Vancouver, B.C.—sways with your first step. And your hundredth. In between, you’ll stare at the mountains, listen to the rushing Capilano River 230 feet below, and reassure yourself that the bridge is strong enough to carry you. When a 40-ton Douglas fir crashed onto the cables during a storm last year, it was the tree that snapped. Across the canyon, seven more suspension bridges usher hikers through a rain forest canopy. $23 adults, $7 kids. (604) 985-7474, www.capbridge.com.

Can’t get there? Here’s another
Peer down at a 75-foot-high waterfall from the center of Oregon’s Drift Creek Falls Suspension Bridge. The timber-and-steel span, built in 1997, is 240 feet long. Off Highway 101 near Lincoln City, Ore.
