What began a decade ago as an ambitious $125 million renovation of the Portland Art Museum culminated in October with the reopening of the museum’s North Building. The former Masonic Temple now houses the Northwest Film Center, the 33,000-volume Art Study Center and Library, and the addition that’s generating the most buzz: the Jubitz Center for Modern and Contemporary Art.

The 28,000-square-foot center—the largest gallery in the Pacific Northwest devoted to 20th-century art—traces the evolution of modernism, beginning with the impressionist movement of the late 19th century. More than 400 pieces, including abstract expressionist paintings by Jackson Pollock and Helen Frankenthaler, will appear on a rotating basis. Information: (503) 226-2811, www.pam.org.
