Tip-Top African Art

  Wooden Gelede hat

The Yoruba people of Nigeria and Benin are renowned artists. Each spring, men don intricately carved headdresses for a celebration called the Gelede masquerade honoring the community’s women. This ornate version appears with other ritual objects in Yoruba Sculpture: Selections from the Mary Johnston Collection at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in Salem, Ore., from January 19 to March 16.
