TRAVEL TALK
Yogi on the road

Darrin Zeer

By Darcy Brown-Martin

Long lines at the airport, lost luggage, terrible traffic, uncomfortable hotel beds. How can you relax on a vacation when travel involves so many stressful situations? Darrin Zeer, author of the new compact book Travel Yoga, offers the answers.

Q Why travel yoga?
A A Much of what happens during travel is out of our control and that makes us tense. Mostly, though, I’ve learned that travel is about waiting. And in my mind, time spent waiting is an opportunity to calm down.

Q And yoga can help?
A Yes. Doing simple poses can bring you back into your body and get you grounded.

Q Can you give an example?
A Sure. If you’re getting anxious waiting in line, try the Patience Pose. Stand on your left foot. Cross your right foot over your left, but don’t let your right foot touch the ground. Focus your gaze ahead of you. Just balancing on one foot gets you rooted and takes your mind off your worries. Remember to switch legs and repeat.

Q Wow, that’s great. How about another one?
A Try the Happy Travel Stretch. While sitting, interlace your fingers behind your head. Smile, breathe, and stretch your elbows backward. Take a deep breath and repeat as needed.
