Save on the go

Of course, VIA readers show their AAA cards for discounts, but that’s not the only way to take the cha-ching out of travel.

"Camp!" says Becky Shenton of Fremont, Calif. "You’ll have more money for activities."

"Want to try a fancy restaurant?" asks Karola Craib of Berkeley, Calif. "Dine at lunch when menu prices are lower."

"Check the local newspaper for free events," suggests Lisa Murray of Great Falls, Mont.

"I eat breakfast at mom-and-pop cafés, enjoy picnic lunches at parks, and split entrées at dinner," writes Nancy Rubin of Kensington, Calif.

"Go in the off-season," advises Debra Grabowski of Coquille, Ore. "You’ll often pay a lot less before Memorial Day."
