Illustration of people picking up trash on a beach

Reuse hotel towels, drive a
fuel-efficient car, pack a water
bottle—these are a few ways travelers can minimize impact on the environment. VIA readers offer more ideas.

"When my boyfriend and i walk the beach at our place in Florida," says Carole Rowe of Portola Valley, Calif., "we pick up trash along the way."

"Get maps and directions from AAA to plan the most direct route," suggests John Wong of Eugene, Ore.

"Don’t drive faster than 60 mph for the best fuel economy on road trips," says Linda McKinney of Helena, Mont.

"In hotels, we leave behind unused bottles of bathroom amenities," writes Sheila O’connor of San Francisco.

"Walk and use public transportation," says Emma Vetter of Monterey, Calif. "Stay at a hotel that’s centrally located."
