Dogged Devotion
bronze statue of Shep the border collie in Fort Benton, Mont.

Not every dog gets enshrined in bronze. But in Fort Benton, Mont., a border collie named Shep earned that honor. In 1936, the collie’s master died and his body was sent east on a train. Shep never again left the station. For 51/2 years he met all four trains a day until, in 1942, he was struck and killed. This statue, on Front Street, is a monument to loyal pets everywhere. www.fortbenton.com.
