Philipsburg's Kaiser House matches historic charm with modern comforts.
The Pintler Scenic Route, Montana Highway 1 between Anaconda and Drummond, ranks as one of the state’s great drives, even in winter. It delivers you to the friendly Discovery Ski Area and to Philipsburg, where tired skiers are warmly welcomed.
Among the town’s pleasures is the newly refurbished Kaiser House, a second-floor hotel with four sweet guest rooms. Owners Lynn and Kurt Unger took care to preserve details of the 130-year-old building including its windows and French doors, 10-foot ceilings, brick walls, and, in the lobby, fleur-de-lis crown moldings. An upstairs lounge is the perfect place to sink into an overstuffed recliner and warm your feet by the fire.
Rooms feature lush linens, Internet access, flat-screen TVs, and private baths—two with oversize tubs. There’s even a massage therapist on call. Room rates include breakfast, with such dishes as cinnamon-dusted French toast soufflé.
Snookies Mercantile, the Ungers’ first-floor shop, stocks kitchen gadgets, unusual handbags, greeting cards, and a selection of South American wines. Guests sometimes slip down for a bottle of hearty Argentine malbec. (406) 859-2004, kaiserhouselodging.com.
