San Francisco's Lands End Lookout offers a Pacific Ocean view. Reach it by way of a small detour off the city's 49 Mile Drive.

Some vacations are all about the destination, and others are all about the journey. The best road trips balance the two: outstanding spots to eat and play, plus gorgeous scenery along the way. These six Golden State routes take you from the heart of San Francisco to Mt. Shasta, Gold Country to Santa Cruz, the Redwood Highway to I-5. No matter where you roam, let the road be your signpost.
