On the right track

Those who enjoyed “Trains!” (September/October) should know about the California Zephyr (see Trains in the West [2]—editor). Going east from Emeryville, Calif., it passes the Sierra, the Truckee River, and Humboldt Sink; fine scenery indeed. On day two it leaves Salt Lake City behind to meet the Colorado River, then winds upward through a seemingly endless succession of canyons until it tunnels under the Great Divide and descends the east face of the Rockies’ Front Range to Denver. The dramatic build during the journey is phenomenal.—Karl Smith, Richmond, California

Our September/October story on the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas (Viva Liberace! [3]) has a sad sequel. Shortly after publication, the museum announced that it would shut down permanently on October 17 “due to the economic downturn and the decline in the number of visitors.” —Editor
