Twelve-foot skis are used to recreate the speed skiing competitions that gold miners around Plumas County started in the 1860s. Participants dress in period costume as they plummet down the slope on skis slathered in a concoction designed to make them go faster called "dope." Folk histories suggest longboard skiers once reached speeds of 90 miles per hour.
