In the early 1900s, a block of Butte, Mont., known as China Alley, brimmed with shops and restaurants that were operated by Chinese immigrants. Today, the Mai Wah Society celebrates that history with a parade on Chinese New Year. A 60-foot-long dragon–a gift from the people of Taiwan–leads the procession through downtown, stopping at businesses to evoke prosperity. Any lingering feelings of bad luck are obliterated with the din of 100,000 fireworks in the late afternoon.
