The Oregon Film Museum is set to open in Astoria’s former Clatsop County Jail.
Remember the jail cell in the opening scene of The Goonies, Steven Spielberg’s 1985 adventure classic? If you do, you’re a bigger movie buff than most. Double that if you know that the film was shot in Astoria, Ore., as were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, Kindergarten Cop, and Short Circuit. News to you? The Oregon Film Museum, set to open in Astoria’s former Clatsop County Jail, will clue you in.
A stream of Goonies fans taking pictures outside the building was the first sign to Mac Burns, executive director of the Clatsop County Historical Society, that the venture could be a hit. “Now they can take pictures from the inside,” he says. Exhibits include the harmonica from Free Willy, signed scripts, and tips on visiting sites in the state used to film hundreds of movies, among them Drugstore Cowboy and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Opening day is June 4, during a 25th anniversary celebration of The Goonies. (503) 325-2203, cumtux.org .
