You won’t find a splinter of wood in Deborah Butterfield’s Hawaii (Big Island). For this life-size mare, the Montana artist gathered weathered branches from lava flows near Kilauea in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, then had them cast in bronze and patinated to resemble the raw material. The 1.2-ton piece joins 13 more of her horses at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, through September 23. (775) 329-3333, www.nevadaart.org .
