This brightly colored bird calls from the slopes of Hawaii's Mauna Kea volcano.

Birders know they’ve heard the ‘i‘iwi when it sings its name: ee-ee-vee. The best place to listen for its distinctive, squeaky call—and to look for the red plumes that inspired its other name, the scarlet honeycreeper—is among the ‘ohi‘a trees in the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the slopes of Hawaii’s Mauna Kea volcano (four-wheel drive required).
