In 1926 President Calvin Coolidge designated the 267-foot-tall General Grant Tree as the “Nation’s Christmas Tree.” Crowds have flocked to it during the holiday season ever since. In 1956 it was also established as the only living monument to honor those who have given their lives in service to the country. Chartered buses take visitors from the town of Sanger into the park, where every year a large wreath is placed at the base of the tree by Park Rangers in honor of the men and women of the armed forces who have died in the past year.
