The California Academy of Sciences' Skulls exhibit may seem macabre. But skulls offer insights into animals' lives and evolutionary history. The show features 640 vertebrate heads, ranging from those of tiny shrews to one form a massive African bull elephant. More than 400 sea lion specimens are on display, as well as fish, frogs, walruses, and warthogs. Visitors can also see the dermestid beetle in action, the bug's larvae can scour the flesh off a skull in days. OK, maybe it's a little macabre.
