Return to the Sea, Saltworks by Motoi Yamamoto
559 Pacific St.
Monterey, CA 93940
Motoi Yamamoto’s art installations range from geometric to almost biological, resulting in swirls that may look like a typhoon or a blooming rose. What might be harder to imagine is that his works, including the 1,800-square-foot design currently on view, are made entirely of table salt. Marvel at the acclaimed artist’s ability to transform some 450 pounds of the mineral into intricate, one-of-a-kind masterpieces. On August 25, visitors can help him dismantle the exhibit, and pour some of the salt into the Pacific Ocean to honor a Japanese ritual.
