The muted colors and utilitarian elements of today’s military uniforms are a far cry from the vibrant regalia worn by samurai warriors in Japan from the 13th to 20th centuries. Some 63 pieces detail the ways that face masks and daggers defined a warrior’s prowess—and show how the cultural artifacts resurface in American pop culture. Consider this idea as you examine a black lacquered helmet that recalls the one worn by Darth Vader.
