After leaving his native France, 19th-century master painter Jules Tavernier never looked back. He took his artistic training and applied it to scenes of the American West, where he settled to paint adventure and beauty. Jules Tavernier: Artist and Adventurer features 100 paintings and works on paper, from Tavernier's early transcontinental illustrations for Harper's Weekly to his paintings of Native American subjects to scenes of the San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey Peninsula. Signature paintings include those of erupting volcanoes, which Tavernier painted in Hawaii until his untimely death at age 45.
