Smokey Bear, Darth Vader, the 112-foot tall “Shark,” and some 100 other hot air balloons float above you at the largest free hot-air balloon festival in the nation. Stroll along Balloon Boulevard, lined with food and crafts from nearly 80 vendors; learn about the roles of astronauts and engineers during a simulated space mission; attend a giant pajama party with a contest for “Best Bedhead”—or, to get a feel for the higher elevations, take a tethered balloon ride. On Saturday and Sunday, you can arrive in the early morning to see a group of balloons twinkle like tiny fireflies in the sky during the Dawn Patrol show.
