When you plan a scenic drive through California redwood country, be sure to include a walk in the woods.

Sometimes the simplest escapes are the best. California’s Humboldt Redwoods State Park makes an inspiring summer destination. The park includes the region’s largest old- growth redwood forest among its nearly 53,000 acres set on Highway 101 about 230 miles north of San Francisco. Just steps from an Avenue of the Giants parking area, the Grieg-French-Bell Trail passes through carpeted groves of soaring trees.
