After a 20-year stint at Sports Illustrated, where he was a senior writer, Bruce Newman decided to make-over his career and write about movies. For five years, he freelanced, covering Hollywood for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, US magazine, Entertainment Weekly, and . Then, he reinvented himself again as a movie critic for the San Jose Mercury News. All of that helped prepare him to write about the beautiful, old movie palaces of the West for VIA. Newman won a Gold Lowell Thomas award in the category "short article on travel" for "Trains That Won the West" (VIA: Nov/Dec 2011).
